Arthur Griswold Crane was born in Davenport Center, New York, on September 1, 1877. He attended and graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1902. After serving in World War I, he received returned to school and received his doctorate degree from Columbia University in New York City in 1920. His life was devoted largely to education. He was president of the University of Wyoming from 1922 to 1941. In politics, he was elected Secretary of State in 1946. He became acting governor in 1949, following Governor Lester Hunt's election to US Senate, and served through 1950.
He married Lura May DeArment on August 23, 1904. They had two children.
Crane died on August 11, 1955, at the VA Hospital in Cheyenne.
