Alonzo M. Clark was born on August 13, 1868 in Flint, Indiana. In 1869, his family moved to Nebraska. He graduated from Peru State Normal College in 1909, and went on to teach in Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. In 1907, he homesteaded in Campbell County, and ranched and taught school at the same time. Active in the Republican Party, he served as county clerk, deputy county clerk, and clerk of the district court in Campbell County. He was elected Secretary of State in 1926 and was re-elected in 1930. Upon the death of Governor Frank C. Emerson, Clark was acting governor from February 18, 1931 to January 2, 1933.
He married Lucy M. Smith on November 28, 1896 in Chadron, Nebraska. They had one son (Donald). Lucy died in January 1, 1944. Alzono married Florence Russell Clark on January 31, 1949 in Cheyenne.
Clark died on October 12, 1952 in Thermopolis, and is buried in Carleton, Nebraska, next to his first wife.
