Archibald D. Cook was born June 19, 1861 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was educated in the National schools of Edinburgh, and the public schools of Pennsylvania.

After acquiring some experience in clerking, mining and railroading, came to the Black Hills country, where he engaged in mining for several years. In 1886, he was employed by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company to make a prospecting trip, which continued for eighteen months, through Converse County, Wyoming. He located permanently in Douglas and entered into the mercantile business for three years. Cook was elected county clerk and register of deeds. In 1891 he organized the Douglas Band which, in 1901, was appointed as the military band of the First Regiment of Wyoming National Guard. Cook was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction, serving from January 7, 1907 until January 2. 1911. He died in Douglas on April 23, 1943.
