Asbury Bateman Conaway was born near Leroy, Illinois on October 13, 1837. After receiving a law degree from Iowa Wesleyan University, he started his legal practice in Clariton, Iowa in 1861. In 1868, he moved to South Pass and later, in 1869, to Green River, Wyoming. Conaway served as county and prosecuting attorney for Sweetwater County and was active in politics. On June 21, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison appointed him to the Territorial Supreme Court. He was elected to the State Supreme Court in September 1890. He died near the end of his second term on December 8, 1897.
