Charles Nelson Potter was born in Cooperstown, New York on October 31, 1852. He practiced law in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a few years and then moved to Cheyenne in 1876. Active in politics, he served as city attorney, county and prosecuting attorney, member of the Capitol Building Commission, member of the Constitutional Convention and attorney general. He was elected justice of the Supreme Court in 1894 and re-elected in 1902, 1910, 1918 and 1926. Potter died on December 20, 1927 in Cheyenne.
