Ed Herschler was born on October 27, 1918 on his grandfather's homestead in the Fontenelle Creek area of Lincoln County, near Kemmerer. He was raised on a ranch and attended Kemmerer public schools. He completed pre-law training at the University of Colorado.

During World War II Herschler served with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific where he was wounded in action.

After graduating from the University of Wyoming Law School in 1949, he was Kemmerer's town attorney and for eight years, Lincoln County's prosecuting attorney. He was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives in 1959 and served five terms.

Herschler was elected governor in 1974, and was re­-elected in 1978 and 1982. His terms in office coincided with a period of unprecedented growth in Wyoming due to the development of energy-related resources and he was most proud of his administration's accomplishments in managing the social and economic impacts of that growth. He is the longest serving Wyoming governor to date.

Herschler chose not to run for a fourth term and entered private law practice in Cheyenne. He died on February 6, 1990.

Herschler and his wife Casey were the parents of two children (Jim Herschler, Sue Hunt).
