George W. French was born in Thomaston, Maine, on August 11, 1823. He practiced law in Maine and from 1869 to 1873 was chief justice of the Dakota Territory. He was appointed Secretary of Wyoming Territory by President Grant on February 24, 1875 and served until February 25, 1879. He returned to Maine and died in Orlando, Florida.
