US Senator 1936-1942Henry Herman "Harry" Schwartz was born May 18, 1869 on a farm in Mercer County. Ohio. He was educated in the public schools of Mercer County, Ohio, and admitted to practice law in South Dakota in 1895. In 1896, Schwartz was elected a member of the legislature in that State. He served as special agent and Chief of field Division of the United States General Land Office 1897-1907, special assistant to the United States Attorney General in 1907, and Chief of Field Service, General Land Office in Washington, 1907-1910.
Following his move to Casper in 1915, Schwartz served six years as president of Casper Board of Education and seven years as trustee of Memorial Hospital, Casper. Schwartz was elected to the Wyoming State Senate, 1933-1935. He served a Democratic precinct committeeman county chairman, State committeeman, State chairman, and national committeeman from Wyoming and was elected delegate to national conventions in 1928, 1932 and 1940. Following an unsuccessful campaign for the United States Senate in 1930, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1936 but was unsuccessful in his bid for reelection in 1942. In 1943, president nominated him for the national railway mediation board.
Schwartz retired to Casper, where he died April 24, 1955.
