John F. Raper, Jr. was born on June 13, 1913 in Mapleton, Iowa. After receiving a law degreee from the University of Wyoming in 1936, he practiced law in Sheridan into the 1950s. He was later a US Attorney, Wyoming Attorney General, and a district court judge. Governor Stanley K. Hathaway appointed him to the Supreme Court on December 18, 1974. Raper retired on June 14, 1983 and died in Cheyenne on June 10, 1993. He was also a WWII and Korean War veteran, and a colonel in the Wyoming National Guard. The National Guard armory in Cheyenne is named for him.
