John H. Howe


 Wyoming Supreme Court 1869 - 1871

John Homer Howe was born on September 12, 1822 in Riga, New York. He was a lawyer in Ohio, a lawyer and judge in Illinois and a Civil War veteran. President Grant appointed him chief justice for the Wyoming Territory on April 6, 1869. He resigned on October 14, 1871. He later received a presidential appointment as secretary to a boundary commission to adjust a dispute between the United States and Mexico. Howe died on April 3, 1873 in Laredo, Texas and is buried in Kewanee, Illinois.

As a judge, Howe encouraged women to serve on juries in the Territory.
