US Senator, 1977-1995Malcom Wallop was born in New York City, February 27, 1933. His paternal grandfather, Oliver H. Wallop, came to Wyoming in the late 1800’s from England and established a successful cattle ranch in the Sheridan area. He served as a Sheridan County Representative in the 1909-11 legislative session before renouncing his American citizenship and returning to England in 1925 to claim his family title as the 8th Earl of Portsmouth. He is the only Wyoming legislator known to have also sat in England’s House of Lords. Malcolm Wallop attended public schools in Big Horn, Wyoming, and the Cate School, Carpenteria, California. He graduated from Yale University in 1954. A businessman and cattle rancher, he served in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1969-1972, and the Wyoming State Senate from 1973-1976. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976 and re-elected in 1982 and 1988. He was not a candidate for re-election in 1994. In 1994, he founded Frontiers of Freedom Institute to study issues involving constitutional freedoms.
He served as a member of the Commission to Assess U.S. National Security Space Management and Organization (the “Rumsfeld Space Commission”) in 2000-2001.
Wallop died at his home near Big Horn, Wyoming, on September 14, 2011.
