Robert D. Carey was born on August 12, 1878 in Cheyenne to Governor Joseph and Louisa Carey. After graduating from Yale University, Carey returned to Wyoming to manage the extensive Carey ranching holdings. Over time, he developed numerous business and real estate interests across the state and was a member of numerous organizations. He was active in politics, including Converse County commissioner, state fair commission, State Council of Defense, Republican Party, and a 1924 presidential commission. He was elected governor in 1918 and served one term. He was elected the US Senate in 1930 but was defeated for re-election in 1936. He died in Cheyenne on January 17, 1937.
