Stanley K. Hathaway was born on July 19, 1924 in Osceola, Nebraska, the son of Robert and Lilly Knapp. When his mother died two years later he was adopted by Franklin E. and Velma Hathaway. He grew up on a farm near Huntley, Wyoming and graduated from Huntley High School in 1941.

Hathaway attended the University of Wyoming before joining the Army Air Force in 1943. He served in Europe during World War II.

After the war Hathaway completed his bachelor of arts (1948) and law (1950) degrees at the University of Nebraska and then returned to Torrington to practice law.

Hathaway was elected governor in 1966 and 1970. He chose not to run for a third term. Shortly after leaving office he was named by President Gerald Ford to head the Interior Department. He was sworn in on June 13, 1975 but resigned on July 25 due to ill health. He briefly returned to Torrington and then moved to Cheyenne to practice law. He died on October 4, 2005 in Cheyenne.

Hathaway and his wife Roberta had two children (Susan Garrett,Sandra D'Amico).
