State Treasurer 1967-1971Minnie A. Mitchell was born on April 22, 1892, near Crawford in Western Nebraska, and came to Lander in a covered wagon with her family in 1896. After graduating from high school, she began her teaching career - two years in Fremont County and three in Natrona. She was the first teacher in the newly established town of Arminto.
In July 1916, she was married to J. R. "Mitch" Mitchell, whom she assisted when he entered the mercantile and grocery business, first in Kaycee and then in Casper.
Following his death in 1952, she was appointed to fill his unexpired term as State Treasurer. She was the first woman in Wyoming ever to serve in this office. She next ran for State Auditor in 1954 and was again the first in her field. She served as State Auditor twelve years. In 1966, she was elected State Treasurer. She served in that office until the end of her term, and she retired January 3, 1971.
Mitchell passed away on December 27, 1978, and is buried in Casper, Wyoming.
